District 22: Boon Lay, Jurong, Tuas, Singapore
Introduction
Situated in the Western region of Singapore, District 22 is comprised of Boon Lay, Jurong, and Tuas areas was once a barren swampland in the 20th century with the Jurong area receiving its name after the Malaysian translation for Shark. During the development of this district with residential areas being made in Jurong and Boon Lay, named after a rubber plantation businessman, and people being moved out of Tuas to make way for factories, this extended area is now known for its many parks with beautiful scenery, industrial factories, and many other leisure places.
Shopping and Dining
There are many shopping malls in this area such as Jurong Point, Boon Lay Shopping Centre, IMM, JEM, and JCube, and shoppers can expect a vast array of stores selling anything from fashion to technology to grocery items. Furthermore, all these malls include many restaurants and food places with cuisines from all around the world that one can enjoy.
Besides the many restaurants in the malls, there are also various hawker centres in this area for great-tasting, cheap local food, including Yuhua Market & Hawker Centre, Taman Jurong Market and Food Centre, 505 Food Centre, Boon Lay Place, Tuas Food Village and many more.
Despite being far from town, Jurong has many activities for people of all age ranges. One of Jurong’s many highlights includes many scenic locations with many different features, such as Jurong Lake Gardens, housing the Chinese and Japanese Gardens, Jurong Hill Park, known for famous trees and vantage points, and Bukit Batok Nature Park, known for Tranquill Quarry Pool.
Besides these scenic destinations, there are many thrilling and fun places like Jurong East Swimming Complex. Despite its deceiving name, it is one of the biggest Waterparks in Singapore with many slides and even a lazy river. Other notable places of interest include a Bird Park, a massive Go-Karting Arena, an Indoor Ice Skating rink, and a famous cycling destination: Tuas Lampost 1.
Nearby Educational Institutions
There are many educational institutions in this area from primary schools to universities. The most notable in this area include Canadian International Schol and the Nanyang Technological University, one of Singapore’s best universities and known for having the largest campus and many interesting landmarks like the Hive and Yunnan Park.
Clubhouses
Another popular destination in Jurong is the clubs in this area which are Jurong Country Club and Raffles Marina which is popular with locals and ex-pats alike.
Transportation Network
Besides driving, this area is highly accessible through many East-West line MRT Stations including Jurong East, Chinese Garden, Lakeside, Boon Lay, Tuas Link, etc. as well as many bus stops including J Gateway Bus Interchange in Jurong East.
